Every Child, Cradle to Career

Each week, we will be lifting up community members and partners on social media who are doing their part to ensure that every child is ready, cradle to career. No matter how big or small, we are recognizing and celebrating their efforts! This month’s spotlight is Ja’lynn Marie.

In just a few months summer will be here. Keeping kids engaged during the summer is critical. Ja’lynn Marie, who is in the 3rd grade, will help kids get ahead of summer slide, the process of losing gains made during the school year over summer break, by giving away free books. Through our work with the Early Grade Literacy Outcome Team, we know that shared reading with an adult or peer leads to improved literacy outcomes. This drive is a great way to help kids build their home libraries and we want to encourage parents, teens and peers to read together with students up to third grade and beyond.

Ja’lynn is collecting books from now until June 15th for her annual book drive. There are three drop off locations listed on the flyer if you’d like to help.

Ja’lynn is the co-author of the children’s book, Pretty from the Kink in my Curls to the Beat in my Step. Ja’lynn co-wrote this book with her mother to encourage girls to love themselves from head to toe. She loves to read and wants to spread her love of reading to the others.
