Several organizations are teaming up to build teens a new safe space to play in Rochester’s Beechwood neighborhood.
The City of Rochester, ROC The Future, Healthi Kids, Connected Communities, StriveTogether, and KABOOM! are constructing an adventure course at Grand Avenue Park on Grand Avenue in Rochester.
After volunteers spent the day working on the course, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the new space.
Organizers say too often teens are forced to grow up to fast, and this project is meant to give them a positive outlet and safe space where they feel like they belong.
Local teens even had direct input on the adventure course’s design.
“They wanted to make sure that the hard of hearing community was included and represented, so we have sign language signs here,” Kilolo Moyo-White from ROC the Future said. “They also said that it was really important to be inclusive for kids that have different learning disabilities as well, so we wanted to make sure that we had auditory learning opportunities with the xylophone and drums.”
