Every Child, Cradle to Career: Community Spotlight

ACT Lit Circle

This month’s community spotlight is the A.C.T Lit Literary Circle held at the Avenue Black Box Theater. The A.C.T Lit Literary Circle is the brainchild of MCC professor Tokeya Graham. It was a two day session open to girls ages 8 – 16, featuring the award-winning, middle grades novel, Love Like Sky by local author Leslie Youngblood. Love Like Sky is the story of a young girl coping with her new blended family and the illness of her little sister. It chronicles her journey and ends with her learning that her strength comes from knowing her family’s love is like the sky (limitless). The girls participated in a book discussion on the first day and met the author for a book signing on the second day. This support of literacy by community members shows the importance of every person doing their part to ensure every child, cradle to career. The A.C.T Lit Literary Circle was made possible by a generous contribution from the Women’s Foundation of Genesee Valley who purchased 800 copies of Love Like Sky to gift to deserving organizations throughout Rochester.
